Press Release How many world records are there in New Brunswick? Answer: At least one more. Four Saint John dart players recently established a new World Double Darts Record by playing darts for 29 hours and 23 minutes, beating the previous existing record by two hours and one minute. Nelson Landry, Peter Doiron, Bernard McKinnon and Bill Bannister beat the previous record of 27 hours and 22 minutes set in Australia in August 2008. ?We set out to play for 30 hours, but when the record had been beaten by two hours we decided that it was enough?, says the organizer of the record-setting marathon, Nelson Landry. The foursome started playing at 6:00 p.m. on Friday February 12th 2010 at the Saint John Buffalo Club on Union Street and threw the last dart at 11:23 p.m. on Saturday February 13th. During the 29 hours and 23 minutes, the new world record holders played 592 games. ?At 4 players shooting an average of five turns in one game, that means 60 darts thrown per game which means that we threw over 35,500 darts during the marathon?. Landry says that fatigue started to show after 24 hours of play. ?During the first ten hours, we were hitting the triple 20?s and taking out the doubles early in the games. At the halfway mark of 15 hours, we had played over 300 games. But then we had more difficulty hitting the triples and the doubles?, he says. ?We were tired at the end but very excited about breaking a world record. Personally, my back and legs felt most of the fatigue. I was surprised that the throwing arm and the shoulders still felt pretty good after 29 hours.? Landry says that none of the 4 players have any regrets. ?It?s not every day that you beat a world record. But one thing is for sure, if I ever try to beat a world record again, it will be for something sitting down?, he says with a laugh. Landry is currently in the process of gathering official witnesses statements and putting video highlights of the event on CD to be sent to Guinness as proof of the record breaking. ?We should have everything ready to be sent to Guinness at the end of the month and then we should be getting an answer back from them in 4-6 weeks if they recognize or not the new record. We believe that we fulfilled all the necessary requirements to have our record made official by Guinness?. The darts marathon was also a fund raising event with parts of the proceeds being donated to Doranne Thibodeau, a Saint John woman who will be in therapy for several more months after suffering a brain aneurism shortly before Christmas.
